Dart was originally the American sloop Actress. She was captured in 1812 by the British HMS Spartan and auctioned in Saint John, New Brunswick. Her new owner renamed her Dart and fitted her out as a privateer. Dart took part in the War of 1812 by raiding off the coast of Maine and Massachusetts. She was recaptured by the Americans in October 1813.
